Chinese New Year is the most important Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of the lunar New Year. In order to let our international students feel the warmth like at home, Yorkland High School organized fantastic activities to celebrate this festival on February 4th, 2019. At the beginning of the celebration, the student council president and vice president introduced Chinese New Year for all students and teachers. Then, the video from the parents was played  as a surprise. The students received the full blessings from their family. All students and teachers tasted dumplings as well. Finally, the students taught the teachers how to write New Year scrolls and make Chinese paper-cuts. Every student and teacher had a happy time during the celebration.

The St. George campus of the University of Toronto blends historical architecture and inviting green spaces as a backdrop to a truly remarkable community. In order to help the students have a better understanding of the University of Toronto during the university application period, Yorkland contacted  the university and organized a campus tour on January 25th, 2019. The tour focuses on undergraduate opportunities and experiences and are perfect for prospective students, University of Toronto applicants, newly admitted students or just about anyone who wants to learn more about life on campus. The students got to explore academic buildings, colleges, athletic facilities, and other spaces on campus. The campus tour gave the students a feel for student life at the University of Toronto.

Christmas is an annual festival, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25th as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. In order to celebrate the festival, Yorkland held the Christmas party for all students and teachers on December 20th, 2018. The students and the teachers took pictures together, and played the game – Musical Chairs.  In addition, some students did wonderful performances. The students and the teachers all enjoyed the party. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Brown Bag It

Yorkland cooperated ­­­with Youth without Shelter (YWS) to organize a volunteer activity on November 22nd, 2018. YWS is an emergency residence and referral agency serving homeless youth. It is dedicated to providing shelter and support programs for homeless youth ages 16-24. The activity which our students attended was called Brown Bag It. It was organized by our nutrition course and Youth without shelter together. The students of the nutrition course prepared sandwiches, cookies and other needed things. All the things were donated to YWS, and then YWS distributed to people who live in the shelter. In addition, a specialist with the YWS came in and held a workshop with our classes. The event enriched the school life and helped the students better understand Canadian society.

Halloween Party [foogallery id="1483"]Halloween is celebrated in Canada on October 31. It is a day to mark the single night in the year when, according to old Celtic beliefs, spirits and the dead can cross over into the world of the living. Yorkland held the Halloween party for all students and teachers on October 31st, 2018. Most students and teachers dressed up to join the party. Two excellent horror short movies directed by the students were played for all students and teachers to watch. The students also performed the stage play named Beauty and the Beast. Each group was drawing applause for their outstanding performance. Then, the student council hold a vote for masks made by different student groups. University Visit

University Visit[foogallery id="1491"]With the university application season coming up, Yorkland connected with the recruitment offices of different universities to visit our school to help the students of Grade 12 better understand university admission requirements. Lakehead University, University of Toronto, Ryerson University and King’s University College of Western University successively visited our school. The students listened to the lectures carefully and asked questions actively, which laid a good foundation for their university application.

  Yorkland News & Events Thanksgiving Celebration 2018 Introduction of this activityFirst of all, the Student Council decorated the restaurant with the help of the teacher. Then when it was lunch time, the president of Student Council introduced this holiday for students. After that, everyone enjoyed good lunch and pumpkin pie, which were prepared by school. The most interesting thing is that every student received a small card, which we could write to thank people around us. Yorkland News & Events Blue Mountain Field Trip [foogallery id="1386"]Yorkland organized a fall field trip to Blue Mountain, which was on October 4th, 2018. We visited Blue Mountain Village first and then arrived at Scenic Caves which is one of Canada’s “great natural wonders”. The students and teachers walked trails, and explored caves and caverns carved millions of years ago by glacial ice. In addition, they enjoyed wonderful outdoor activities there, such as suspension bridge, zip lining, mini golf, and tree climbing. Yorkland News & Events Ontario University Fair (OUF) The Ontario Universities’ Fair (OUF) began in 1997. It is an important way to help secondary school students gather information about Ontario’s 21 universities. Yorkland organized the students to join the important event together on September 28th, Friday. Yorkland News & Events Student Council Election Student Council offers many rewarding opportunities in which the student body may be willing to contribute their time, talent, energy, imagination and personal resources. In order to make students have a better understanding of our Student Council, a workshop was held on September 07th, 2018. Students who would like to join the Student Council made a speech on September 14th at Small Hall.
